For many of us December is a time celebrate the festive season, spend time with our pack (canine and human) and enjoy traditional festive treats.
But please remember that many of these festive foods are incredibly harmful to dogs. Anything with chocolate in is automatically dangerous for dogs, but top of the list by far are foods such as:
- Mince pies
- Christmas cake
- Pain au raisin
If your dog eats any of these please call your vet straight away, and if it eats anything like the foods in the list above, please call your vet as you are driving in your car to save time – even on Christmas Day itself. You have a limited window with the list above where the sickness injection is effective, so please do not even remotely hesitate. Your dog’s wellbeing must always take precedence over Christmas day celebrations.
Other Christmas food and drink to be careful around include:
- Any alcoholic drink
- Any non-alcoholic drink derived from grapes
- Stuffing
- Onions
- Garlic
- Many different types of nuts (many are poisonous, so easiest thing to do is be careful around all of them)
Please always seek the advice of a vet regarding any of the above.
Have a wonderful festive period with your family, and especially your dog. Make sure they too have an advent calendar, presents for Christmas Day, and that they are included in all the festive fun.
